argumentative essay topic; drug addiction?
Question by xcxrxmx: argumentative essay topic; drug addiction?
i would really like to write an argumentative paper about drug addiction; possibly recovery or something not too scientific about it.
i am having trouble deciding what about drug addiction can be argued? what is a topic that has two opposing sides or different views to drug addiction?
I know where to get information i’m in an argumentative class though; meaning whatever topic i choose there has to be two sides of the issue.
Why people turn to drugs is for many complex reasons, nothing I can argue, and legalization is not on the topic of drug addiction.
But classifying addiction as a ‘disease’ is something that could make an interesting paper.
Anyother ideas? (: thank you.

well you can find out why people turn to drugs, what effect it has on them and their families, the help that is offered, how easy it is to get that help, the relation between drugs and crime, whether drugs should be legal and should alcohol be legal. basiclly find out as much as you can about the subject. personally i think alcohol is the most devistating drug of all.
the best way to find out about recovery is to talk to people who have been there, and organisations involved with it.

If it was me, I’d ask whether by classifying addiction as a disease, we are just enabling people to take no responsibility for their own lives. ‘It’s not my fault, I have a disease.’ Disease or selfishness? Having spent my life surrounded by addicts, I tend to think it’s selfishness. And as family members, how far are we really expected to go to help them with their ‘disease’? If someone has cancer, does that make it okay for them to destroy their families and hurt everyone that loves them? I’m not a scholar but I hope I made a point.

Might need to move out on my own?
Question by nick: Might need to move out on my own?
I live in Washington where weed was just legalized for anyone over 21 and medically anyone over the age of 18. I live in a house with a recovering addict and alcoholic, I started smoking weed my freshmen year until I was caught bu my parents(together at the time) I stopped until about my junior year started smoking a lot more. I got caught again. Stopped until summer of my junior year. So now we are here me senior year. I smoke weed everyday at least and my parents caught me a total of 4 times this year and we get into huge fights over it. Mainly my mom because I live with her. Dad moved out because he beat my mom when he was drunk(also alcoholic and use to do coke and other drugs with my mom). Then my mom fell off the wagon 6 times and been to rehab twice during my high school career. My older brother is in rehab for heroin for the 4th time thins time for a full year of treatment. My friends and I are big potheads but are completely against pill heads or anyone around drugs other than weed and booze sometimes. I would never become a person to use hard drugs like coke and many other my older brother and parents used. I got caught smoking the other day and it did not really phase me I still smoke and plan on it. But I really like having a good healthy relationship with my mom. I will not get anything from my parents to help me for college if I keep smoking weed because they think I will become a heavy drug user. I love my parents but smoking and smokers are my only friends it is something i enjoy doing no matter what anybody says. I have a place to live at anytime if I don’t want to live with my mom. But I don’t want to have to go that far because I love my mom a lot and don’t want to hurt her by leaving. I am on track to graduate was never an option for me not to. What do I do?

For most people the “addiction” is an emotional attachment, and easily overcome. For a few they develop such an emotional bond that they obsess over it, will sit on the couch thinking about nothing else.
Find other things to occupy your mind. Take walks. Anything other than dwell on it. In time, you will simply forget about it.

1 Tips to Cut Your Cholesterol Fast
Got high cholesterol? Learn what you can do to lower it quickly — starting today.
How’s your cholesterol? If you think that the normal reading you got back in 2004 (or earlier) means you’re in the clear, think again: Levels of the artery-clogging substance often rise with age, and cardiologists say everyone 20 or older should be screened for high cholesterol at least once every five years, with more frequent screenings for anyone deemed to be at high risk for heart disease. If it’s been awhile since your last cholesterol screening, now’s a good time to ask your doctor if you’re
The good news? If your fasting total cholesterol level exceeds the desirable level of 200, or if your low-density lipoprotein (LDL, or “bad”) cholesterol is above 100, getting it down to a safer level could be easier than you think. In fact, with simple lifestyle modifications — and, if necessary, drug therapy — people often see significant reductions in cholesterol within six weeks. Get going right now, and by New Year’s Eve you could be toasting your cholesterol level rather than resolving to lower it.
Here are 11 tips from WebMD health experts on how to cut high cholesterol fast:
1. Set a target.
You know you’ve got to get your cholesterol number down, but how low do you need to go? That depends on several factors, including your personal and family history of heart disease, as well as whether you have cardiovascular risk factors, such as obesity, high blood pressure, diabetes, and smoking.
If your risk is deemed high, “most doctors will treat for a target LDL of less than 70,” says James Beckerman, MD, a cardiologist in private practice in Portland, Oregon. If your risk is moderate, a target LDL of under 130 is generally OK, Beckerman says. If your risk is low, less than 160 is a reasonable target. “The trend now is to treat people earlier, especially if they have two or more risk factors,” he says.
2. Consider medication.
Lifestyle modifications make sense for anyone with elevated cholesterol. But if your cardiovascular risk is high, you may also need to take a cholesterol-lowering drug. Michael Richman, MD, medical director of the Center for Cholesterol Management in Los Angeles, calls drug therapy “the only thing that will work fast” to lower high cholesterol. “Everyone should do the basics, like stopping smoking and losing weight,” Richman tells WebMD. “But these things lower the risk only modestly. They’re nothing to write home about.”
Beckerman agrees. “Lifestyle modifications are important, but we should also be emphasizing the benefits of medication when appropriate,” he says.
Several types of cholesterol-lowering medication are available, including niacin, bile acid resins, and fibrates. But statins are the treatment of choice for most individuals. “Statins can lower LDL cholesterol by 20% to 50%” says Pamela Peeke, MD, assistant professor of medicine at the University of Maryland School of Medicine in Baltimore.
. Get moving.
In addition to lowering LDL “bad” cholesterol, regular physical activity can raise HDL “good” cholesterol by up to 10%. The benefits come even with moderate exercise, such as brisk walking.
Robert Harrington, MD, professor of medicine at Duke University School of Medicine in Durham, N.C., urges his patients to go for a 45-minute walk after supper.
Peeke tells WebMD, “I ask people to get a pedometer and aim for 10,000 steps a day. If you work at a desk, get up and walk around for five minutes every hour.”
Whatever form your exercise takes, the key is to do it with regularity. “Some experts recommend seven days a week, although I think five days is more realistic,” Richman says.
4. Avoid saturated fat.
Doctors used to think that the key to lowering high cholesterol was to cut back on eggs and other cholesterol-rich foods. But now it’s clear that dietary cholesterol isn’t the main culprit. “Eggs don’t do all that much [to raise cholesterol],” Beckerman says. “You don’t want to be throwing down six eggs a day, but recent data suggest that it’s really saturated fat” that causes increases in cholesterol. And if you cooked your eggs in a slab of butter, don’t overlook the fat in the butter.
”
5. Eat more fiber.
