Side effects of the H1N1 vaccine / vaccination?

Question by ZZZ: Side effects of the H1N1 vaccine / vaccination?
I was thinking of getting my 5 year old daughter the H1N1 vaccination (the next time there is one) and I had saw a video on youtube about a woman who developed a rare neurological syndrome after getting a flu shot (not the H1N1, just a regular flu shot). 10 days after she got it, she went into convulsions and now can only walk backwards normally. She can’t walk forward and her speech isn’t normal. Oddly, she can run or jog forward and speak normally when she runs.

This worries me, if there is even the slightest possibility that this COULD happen to my child, I don’t want to risk it. Even if it’s .00000001 %

H1N1 vaccine side effects reported

Seven of the 22,000 medical workers vaccinated against H1N1 swine flu have developed side effects, the Health, Labor and Welfare Ministry said.

The finding, released Friday, was revealed after a four-day survey was completed Thursday to ensure the new vaccine was working on doctors and nurses at 67 designated hospitals run by the National Hospital Organization.

Four of the seven developed serious side effects, including vomiting and diminished consciousness, but all are recovering, the ministry said. The other three complained of minor symptoms, such as developing hives.

Decided NOT to get the H1N1 vaccination for my daughter or myself. There has only been a handful of the H1N1 flu virus here in our area. I’m not going to subject my daughter to a new vaccine that has no detailed and long term data research information to back it. With the “flu shot” at least I know it has been around for decades and I know the statistics each year. With the H1N1, I do not. It would be like someone telling me, “Hey take this pill and you won’t grow old.” Why? “Because its FDA approved and millions of other are taking it.” No ways…. Not taking a chance.

Drug Addiction vs. Chocolate Addiction?

Question by greglovern: Drug Addiction vs. Chocolate Addiction?
My wife says that addition to hard drugs such as cocaine and heroin are qualitatively the same thing as addition to anything else, no matter how mild, such as chocolate, and differ ONLY in the degree of their effects.

Is that true?

Can you point me to any helpful links on this?

Best answer:

Answer by Eliot K
That is like saying that a gun and a pillow are the same thing, but in different degrees.

An addiction, by definition, interferes with your leading the life you want to lead. It reduces your power to want and get what is best for you. Addictions usually keep the addict from having honest emotional relationships.

If you have lost your job and beat your children because of chocolate, then it is likely an addiction.

How often does chocolate cause you to spend money you don’t have, beat your children, or lose a job?

Answer by Been There
Your wife is wrong.
“Addiction” refers to physiological addiction .. when you stop using a substance your body has become addicted to, you have withdrawal symptoms.
Heroin withdrawal creates intense stomach cramps, sweating, the shakes, nausea, cramping, vomiting, etc.
Barbiturate withdrawal creates many of the same symptoms .. except that you can actually die if you aren’t careful in HOW you withdraw from it.

Chocolate on the other hand, isn’t going to kill you if you stop eating it.

Why is he so depressed?

Question by Kimmy Henne: Why is he so depressed?
My friend grew up in a very violent household. He grew up never having anybody to rely on. He went out with this girl and she left him because of the way his homelife is (he’s 20 and has had about 20 other girlfriends in the past). But when this one left he really crashed, started using drugs like Xanax and clonazipam. His biological sister promised to always be there for him but after an incident with his adopted mom throwing a chair at him and he sent her the video she said “It’s not my problem” and won’t hear anymore about it, she just ignores him. So now he starts mixing pills and alcohol. He was SO happy when he was with that girl now she left. What could he be doing that kept him out of lovefor so long? He doesn’t know how to get a girlfriend cause he has no confidence and is a little wobbly after a bad car accident. He is about 5′ 8″, blonde and rlly handsome but what can he do? And no I already have a boyfriend

You can have the best advice in the world on how to stop abusing drugs, but it’s of no use if the addict doesn’t want to stop. On the other hand, things can get better by getting worse. There are some experts on addiction who say that the most effective means of stopping abuse is the abuser’s own experience. In other words, “hitting rock bottom,” the agonizing result of addiction, is about as effective as the best treatments (cognitive-behavioral therapy, Motivation Enhancement, 12-Step programs). Medical treatment is important, especially with addicts who abuse more than one drug.

If it will do any good, you can show him about this organization and tell him about how solid it’s reputation is.

http://www.smartrecovery.org/

SMART Recovery offers mutual help for addicts in the form of face-to-face and online meetings. The organization’s philosophy, as outlined at its website, shows the influence of two counseling approaches, cognitive-behavioral therapy and Motivation Enhancement. SMART recovery is not just for drug abuse or alcoholism but for addictions in general.

The SMART Recovery website claims that, because the program is based on established principles , its support is seen in “hundreds” of journal articles. SMART Recovery also claims that it’s recognized by the American Academy of Family Physicians, the Center for Health Care Evaluation, the National Institute on Drug Abuse/US Department of Health and Human Services, and the American Society of Addiction .”

Psychologists have found that activities that new to the person and require thought and memory help recovering addicts. For example, I know of a patient in rehab who learned to play the guitar.
